What is a Sitemap?
A Sitemap is a way to let a search engine know what links you would like to have indexed.  Even if you use a robot.txt, a sitemap is a good idea.  You don't have to choose one or the other either, they both work well together as long as the listed links don't conflict with the robot.txt file. There are a few components in the sitemap file that give direction to search engines, the link, the frequency, and the priority.  The benefit of a sitemap is that it is a lightweight XML file and is written in metadata.  Both of these are search engine friendly.

The old way to get listed in search engines is to have links discovered and then followed by the crawler. Also to manually submit sites to search engines and play the waiting game.  This way you tell the search engine what you want and when you want it to index and re-index thereafter.  Using the sitemap does not guarantee that the site and the links would be indexed, but it increases your chances of getting noticed greatly.

The Protocol

Example of a partial sitemap of designsforme.com site:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset
xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="
http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9
http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/09/sitemap.xsd">

<url>
<loc>http://designsforme.com/</loc>
<priority>0.5</priority>
<changefreq>daily</changefreq>
</url>

</urlset>

The top portion defines the xml file and the protocol of the Sitmap 0.90

The url section defines the location, priority, and how often its changed

The Breakdown
First, define the file and the language used in the file.

   <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

Second, define the protocol of the sitemap and start the url set

   <urlset
      xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9"
      xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
      xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9
      http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/09/sitemap.xsd">

Third, define the url (using the <url> tag to encapsulate)

      <url>
      <loc>http://designsforme.com/</loc>
      <priority>0.5</priority>
      <changefreq>daily</changefreq>
      </url>

<loc></loc> is the location of the url as it appears in the browser
<priority></priority> is the priority of the link on a 0.0 to 1.0 scale
<changefreq></changefreq> tells the search engine how often the page changes

Repeat the above code for all links that you want noticed

Finally, Close the urlset "using </urlset>"

Once you have finished your sitemap upload it to your website (make sure that it is in .xml format)

Submit your sitmap to the following sites also:

To submit to other search engines add the sitemap auto-discovery directive to robots.txt
